Telegram updates in 2026: what changed
Telegram published 7 update posts between January and July 2026. Some were small. Two of them changed how a Telegram presence can be built. Here is what shipped, in plain terms, and what it means if you run a channel or a group.
The release rhythm
Telegram ships often. In its January post, the company said 2025 brought more than 75 new features across 13 major updates. That is roughly one update every 26 days. The first half of 2026 kept a similar pace: January 3, February 9, March 1, March 31, May 7, June 11, and July 14.
This matters for one practical reason. If you plan a Telegram strategy around a current feature set, the set will move under you. Plan for the direction, not the details.
AI moved inside the app
In 2025, AI on Telegram mostly meant third-party bots. In 2026, it moved into the product itself.
The January 3 update added AI summaries for long channel posts and for Instant View pages. The March 31 update added an AI editor for text. The May 7 update added guest AI bots, custom AI styles, and bot-to-bot chats. The July 14 editor can generate text as you write.
The pattern is clear. Telegram is treating AI as a default part of reading and writing, not an add-on.
Cocoon: the network under the AI
Telegram's AI features do not run on a normal cloud. They run on Cocoon, which stands for Confidential Compute Open Network. It is built on TON, the blockchain linked to Telegram.
The idea works like this. People with capable GPUs install a node and register their machine. Requests run inside hardware enclaves, using Intel TDX. GPU owners earn TON for the work. Developers pay in TON for access. Telegram says the design means nobody, including the hardware owner, can read what is computed.
Two honest notes. First, Cocoon is Telegram's own network, not an independent one. Second, the privacy claim rests on the hardware enclaves working as described. That is a design choice with a real security record behind it, but it is a claim about architecture, not a promise. Read it as a signal, and judge it the same way you would judge any vendor's own security statement.
Communities are the structural change
This is the July 14 headline, and the biggest shift of the year for anyone running a Telegram presence.
A Community links several supergroups, channels, and bots around one topic or audience. Members can find and join the chats inside it without an invite link. Chats can be visible to every member, or hidden and shown only to admins and specific people. In the chat list, a Community can collapse into one expandable entry instead of many separate rows.
By default, any member can add a chat to a Community. Admins can restrict that if they do not want surprise additions.
The old pattern was one channel plus one discussion group, held together by pinned links. Communities replace that with a real structure. If you run several Telegram chats today, this is worth an hour of planning.
The rich text editor
Telegram messages used to be short and lightly formatted. The July 14 editor changes that. It supports headings, tables, lists, quotes, and code blocks. You can place photos and videos in the middle of a message.
A message can now hold up to 32,768 characters. After the first 8,000, readers get a "Show More" button. The editor also has AI text generation, running through Cocoon.
The editor is limited to Premium subscribers. Telegram joked about the restriction in its own post, calling the alternative the "Poor Text Editor".
The direction here is worth naming. A message that holds 32,768 characters, tables, and inline media is not a message. It is a page. Telegram keeps moving toward being a place you publish, not just a place you talk.
Ephemeral messages in groups
Group chats fill with bot noise: confirmations, errors, menus, summaries. The July 14 update lets bots reply privately inside a group. The reply is visible only to the bot and the person who triggered it.
Bots can send these at any time, or in response to specific commands. Commands that produce a private reply are marked with a special icon in the bot menu.
This is a small feature with a real effect. A group with an active bot becomes readable again.
Bots became much more capable
Three updates in a row expanded what bots can do.
- March 31: bots managed by other bots.
- May 7: bot-to-bot chats, and chat automation.
- June 11: rich text for bots. Bots can reply with formatting, tables, blockquotes, checklists, and inline images, up to 32,768 characters.
Taken together, a Telegram bot in mid-2026 can do things that needed a web app a year ago.
AI Guardians for groups
The June 11 update added AI admin bots, which Telegram calls Guardians. They work at two points.
At the door, a Guardian can process join requests for a private group. It can screen applicants through a mini-app flow, including quizzes and custom questions. After someone is admitted, the same bot can remove messages that break the group rules.
Older moderation bots mostly worked on messages already in the chat: keyword filters, link blocking, a CAPTCHA on entry. The admission layer is the new part.
The smaller changes
- February 9: Android redesign, group ownership transfer, gift crafting, colored bot buttons.
- March 1: member tags, Login with Telegram, disable sharing, GIF editing, date formatting, voting timestamps.
- March 31: mighty polls, live photos.
- June 11: apps for Apple Watch and Wear OS.
- July 14: GIF search across 350 million GIFs in 36 languages, running on-device with open-source models.
Two of these are easy to miss and useful. Group ownership transfer solves a real problem when a team changes. Login with Telegram gives you an identity layer without a password form.
What this means if you run a Telegram channel
Four practical reads.
Structure beats volume. Communities reward a planned set of chats over one crowded channel. If you have chats scattered across topics, group them.
Longer posts are now native. The editor removes the old reason to push readers to an external page. Test a full post inside Telegram against your usual link-out.
Bots can carry more work. Ephemeral replies plus rich text mean a bot can handle support inside a group without flooding it.
Moderation got cheaper. Guardians handle screening that used to need a person. That matters most for private groups with a steady flow of join requests.
What we watch next
Two open questions. How far Telegram routes its heavier AI through Cocoon, and whether Communities change how channels are discovered. Discovery has always been Telegram's weak point next to feed-based networks. Communities are the first structural answer to it.
