Why do bought followers quietly disappear over time?

Social networks continuously scan for accounts that behave like bots — created in bulk, no real activity, following thousands with no engagement. When they find them, they remove or suspend them. Every account swept up that happened to 'follow' you drops off your count.

This is why so many SMM panel orders come with a 'refill' window. The seller knows the drop is coming, so they promise to top you back up for 30 or 60 days. Read that promise honestly: it is an admission that the followers are the kind that get removed. Real followers do not need a refill.

When the window ends, the erosion continues and you are on your own. The number you paid for keeps leaking, and the only way to hold it is to keep paying — which is the point.

A count you have to keep re-buying was never an asset. It is a running cost dressed up as a purchase.
